Yes, where is Sup-r-beast at?? I tried to tell you guys but oh no that SWVA football is the [censored] according to some
Ok guys, here is the nutshell of it. Volunteer looked good, really good. They were big (we knew that), they were pretty strong (knew that) but they looked a lot faster than they had looked on film. Not having Robinson hurt, no question, but honestly I'm not sure he would have made a big difference. I know that most people know Counts on here, and his comment was this (he was disgusted, said he probably wouldn't get on), they were best he's seen since Gate City state championship team. Maybe it was just one of those nights, but they were dang near unstoppable. Everything I had heard was that they had lost their first 2 games, but very easily should have been 2-0, and I believe it. I kind of called it a perfect storm before the game. Robinson was out, the week off hurt us I think most people thought, and it was actually cool out. Watching previous weeks, Volunteers big players seem to get tired late in the game, but it wasn't nowhere near as warm tonight as it had been.
No excuses, Volunteer was just hands down a dynamite team tonight.
Dont you all have Lebanon next? If so, ouch.
I went over there and watched the first half and I had enough. I was way wrong about this matchup. I knew Volunteer ran the spread and that Clintwood's weakness on D was the pass. The place where Volunteer got their momentum though wasn't from the spread mainly, it was that Clintwood can outrun most teams in this area by running tosses and counters and getting to the outside, but Volunteer's D--no f'in way. ALL of their guys were fast. Not only were they fast, but they didn't overpursue, they ran to their reads and stayed at home when they should.
And as has been pointed out by some--Cradic's the truth. Kid could play D1 somewhere with his speed--but he's nowhere near big enough in stature to do so. Might make a big big name for himself in a lower level college ranks though.
Church Hill -- The Volunteer Falcons (1-2) were not a friendly host Friday night as they disposed of the Greenwave (2-1) from Clintwood, VA 42-0.
The Falcons defense quickly established itself after a quick three-and-out by the offense, stymieing the Greenewave for -16 yards on their first three plays to force a punt. The Volunteer defense on the night allowed a mere 31 total yards and tallied four sacks in a dominating performance.
Senior running back Shane Barlow ignited the Falcon offense on the second series of the game when he skirted around the left end and rumbled 46 yards for the Falcon touchdown. Keith Cradic added the point after and with 7:07 on the clock the home-standing Falcons led 7-0. The Falcon defense, playing precisely as an unit, forced another Greenwave punt. Volunteer's offense went right back to work driving 53 yards in seven plays. David Mowell erupted the final 22 yards and after a Keith Cradic PAT, the Falcons increased their led 14-0.
Clintwood, playing out of the 1A Lonesome Pine District, managed to drive to the Falcon 32 yard line before turning the ball over on downs to the Volunteer defense. The big play of that drive was the Greenwave's lone spark of the evening as quarterback Heath Counts connected with Tyler Mullins for a 29 yard pass reception. Quickly the Greenwave defense forced a four play series by the Falcons and following a Keith Cradic punt, began at their own 39. On third down, however, Mullins was forced out of the pocket and threw an ill-advised pass down field. Volunteer's Aaron Bennett kindly stepped in front of the pass. Bennett's interception gave Volunteer the ball at midfield. The Falcons made quick work of the fifty yards between them and pay dirt, with Shane Barlow doing most of the damage, carrying the ball three times for 38 yards. With 6:40 left in the half, starting middle linebacker, Jordan Sandidge, entered the game as part of the Falcon's "Jumbo" package. Sandidge saw his number called as he scampered eight yards around the right side resulting in a Volunteer touchdown. Keith Cradic again added the extra point and Volunteer increased the advantage 21-0.
"We just came out tonight with alot of excitement, alot of enthusiasm and we got them in a hurry. Our defense played well and put the pressure on them and our offense was able to take advantage of some things they were giving us." Commented Volunteer head coach Scott Rider. " We are trying to get Keith back where he can see the field a little better (of the shotgun formation). We wanted to give Clintwood alot of different looks. In the process trying to put Keith in a position to do what he does best."
Cradic responded to the offensive scheme, converting the final two Volunteer possessions of the first half into pay dirt. The first, a four yard scamper followed by a twenty yard burst on the next possession. Cradic also added the PATs on both scores pushing the Volunteer advantage to 35-0 going into the locker room.
With the TSSAA rule for clock stoppage invoked (clock does not stop except on time outs with a 35 or greater point lead), the second half finished in a hurry. Clintwood totaled 16 second half plays to Volunteer's 16. The difference maker for Volunteer was their ability to punch the ball into the end zone one more time. With 4:23 remaining in the game, Waylon Williams dashed 10 yards to the end zone. Keith Cradic added the PAT giving Volunteer the 42-0 victory.
Volunteer's Shane Barlow ended the evening early rushing nine times for 116 yards, all but one of which was in the first half. Ethan Mays led all receivers with 71 yards, that coming on one reception.
Volunteer entertains Five Rivers Conference foe Daniel Boone (a 26-7 victor over Sullivan Central) next week while Clintwood remains on the road traveling to Lebanon.
"We have to get better in the kicking game, and we are going to try to build on our positives. The key is coming out with enthusiasm and not playing flat (like Cocke County game)." stated Coach Rider about next Friday.
You mean to tell me they were 1-2 and they dished out that kind of a beatdown on Clintwood? Christ .. what kind of teams do they have over in TN!?
That's the way it is with interstate matchups. The weakest team from another state could quite possibly beat some of the best from your own state. I'd say it takes a lot of scouting to really get a feel for what the other team has and is doing. It's like Lee. They beat KY's AA #5 team. Is it that Lee is that good? Or is it that KY is having a down year? I dunno. But I'll bet that #5 team was as shocked as Clintwood in this one. They had to be thinking, "Lee High? Geez, what a bunch of pansies." Then reality hit them. I'll admit that I know very little about this. But it just seems to reason it's harder to get a feel for an OOS team than it is for a team from your own district or state.
I can't speak for what Vol did in the pre-season but they were Bigger, stronger, faster and better than Clintwood was.
Not sure if we just hit them on one of those nights that they were just ready to explode but dang they were MUCH better than expected (the speed factor really got me on film they looked almost slow but seeing them in person showed me how wrong I was on that one)
